First Day School: More Peace Testimony

On Sunday, the Lone Star Baby and I continued our study of the Peace Testimony in First Day School.  We read Seven Brave Women by Betsy Hearne and discussed ways that people are brave that do not have to do with fighting or war.  We pondered some queries on the theme of peace.  We reviewed our SPICES work.  It was very nice.  We have the best conversations at First Day School.

I'm working on peace studies with my own children. It is so important to me as a mother and as a Friend.

Today I read your post after struggling with my college students' almost complete dismissal of the idea of peace as an option. I realize that they may never have encountered the idea of peace and pacifism as anything other than "unworkable ideals". Somewhere in the midst of our conversation, I realized that they had dismissed the idea of peace work before they even considered it. I'm still feeling discouraged, but reading your post just now was a bit like a little cool water on a hot day. I'm still bummed, but a bit more hopeful.

I am so happy to hear from you, Hystery! It has been a long time since you showed up on my blogroll.

Yeah....peace seems to be so foreign to American culture, maybe to everyone's culture.

When I was in college at the University of North Texas (back when dinosaurs roamed the earth in the early 90s), I took a brand new peace studies class, taught by the late Dr. Poe, who attended the same Worship Group that I attended in Denton. I understand that little class has blossomed into a full-fledged Peace Studies Program at UNT and that it is an example for other universities. Some more hope!
