It's pretty harrowing, but The Windup Girl comes to mind. Also, The Green Book, by Jill Paton Walsh... I think it's got eco themes, at any rate!

Yeah - those are both very harrowing. I got The Green Book for the Girl when she was very young and desperate for terraforming stories but I quite regretted it near the end.
